Torres del Paine National Park, often dubbed as “Towers of the Blue Sky” is a home to probably the most outrageous and wildest mountain treks in the world. This World Biosphere Reserve, situated on the far east of southern of Chilean Patagonia ice fields, receives some of the worst weather conditions on Earth. The weather can change so suddenly that you can literally experience four seasons in one day during your Patagonia travel experience.

Torres del Paine National Park was established in 1959, but the mountainous area itself dates back to 12 million years. This trekking in Patagonia hotbed is over 180,000 hectares in size and features a chain of bodies of water, like glacier-fed lakes, fresh rivers, lagoons and waterfalls. It is also a wonderland of granite peaks, snowed mountains, beautiful grasslands, heavenly meadows, and wild forests that cater to the natural flora and fauna, some species of which were rescued from the verge of extinction.

Some of the best scenery in the area also includes the wide diversity of animal species. Here, you can see eagles and condors soaring above the skies, as well as pumas, guanacos, foxes, cougars, and other unusual creatures playing along.

Things To Do

Torres del Paine is perhaps the most famous hiking destination in Chile, or even in South America. Tourists come to have an adventure of a lifetime.

Hiking Torres del Paine is not as easy as you think. If you are a first-time hiker, always think of your capability. Depending on your endurance, fitness level, health condition, and the weather, you have to choose which circuit is best suited for you. Every Patagonia hiking circuit has its level of difficulty. The span of time you can get through it is based on your abilities and the weather.

The Torres del Paine tour usually commences from the foot of the huge granite towers (torres in Spanish). The common routes are either going through the entire Paine massif or proceeding directly to the massif itself. You can choose between three options: the 5-day “W” trek, 7-day “W” trek or 9-day Torres Del Paine Circuit.

The Circuit – If you want a good look of the whole torres, this trek is perfect for you. The route covers 100 kilometers in length and will take you around the entire area where you can have a spectacular view of the giant towers at every angle. Smaller treks are also available which can get you off the main route. This circuit is a very tough, tiring trek that can be completed in around nine days, less if you’re physically fit. Only experienced mountaineers are recommended to try this trail.

“W” Circuit – Smaller and more refined, this route will only take you around 5 to 7 days. Moreover, it will also give you a peek at the three best attractions of the park – the giants towers (torres), the horned peaks (cuernos), and the grey glacier-fed lake. The circuit is named as such because each and every trek brings you from the base to the mountains and ice fields, then back to the base and up again three times – like a “W”.

Getting There

Fly to Santiago, Chile, then to Punta Arenas. From there, take a bus to Puerto Natales on Seno de Ultima Esperanza. It is here where the National Park is located. Travelers from Argentina have the option to take a bus ride from El Calafate to Torres del Paine. This will only take four to five hours, less if in a

Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world. Its neighboring countries include Bolivia, Uruguay, and Brazil – all known as top tourist destinations in South America. Argentina is a beautiful country every trekker dreams to explore.

With a vast array of flora and fauna and few of the world’s most spectacular views, it is no doubt why a lot of tourists love trekking Argentina. Whether you’re up for a week-long adventure, a day-long hike, or just a short nature trip, you will surely enjoy every spot this country has to offer.

Here, you can find all sorts of outdoor activities – from hiking, trekking, and climbing to fishing, rafting and skiing. Patagonia travel is an especially popular trip to take in this vast country.

Spots for Trekking in Argentina

Trekking Argentina is definitely a must for every traveler. Patagonia is located in the southern most part of South America and spans across Chile and Argentina. It is well known for its untouched beauty that offers a magnificent sight of natural flora and fauna, wild forests, green hills, and huge volcanoes. This place is great for trekking, especially for tourists who want to experience nature and all its gifts to mankind.

Often dubbed as “The End of the World”, Tierra Del Fuego is the country’s national park found near the coast. Tierra Del Fuego and the city of Ushuaia offer a wide range of great activities for adventurous travelers. Among the most popular hiking and trekking destinations are the caves of Alvear Glacier and Laguna Verde.

If you’re looking for the great thrill of adventure, the caves of Alvear Glacier is the perfect spot for you. It offers an amazing Argentina hiking experience to a huge, ancient piece of ice. Make your trip memorable by taking a look at the caves surrounded by a strange (yet spectacular) blue glow emanating from the glacier. This ancient glacier has already existed for over 1,000 years.

Another famous attraction of Tierra Del Fuego is Laguna Verde. This place is quite easy to trek, good for amateur and professional mountaineers. It is also a perfect destination for wildlife photographers and nature watchers as it features a unique landscape to the beautiful lake of Laguna Verde. Here, you can put up a small tent and enjoy a simple picnic while taking a rest and admiring a panoramic view of the place.

No Argentina hiking adventure is complete without a visit to the World Heritage Site of Los Glaciares National Park located near the Austral Andes. It boasts of 47 huge glaciers feeding on a massive ice cap, in fact the largest ice cap outside of Antarctica. This park is also the home to Argentina’s trekking capital, El Chalten. It is a small village where you can find numerous glaciers and mountains covered in ice, Fitz Roy and Los Torres mountains being the most famous.

How To Get There

By Plane – Several Argentinean airlines offers regular flights between Buenos Aires and many cities in South America, as well as in North America, Australia, and Europe. Qantas Airlines has now a direct flight from Sydney, Australia to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

By Bus – All tourists from neighboring countries can take international coaches available.

By Boat – Daily trips are available from Montevideo and Colonia in Uruguay to Buenos Aires.

To get around Argentina, you can take the bus or rent a car. Other options include taking a train or a domestic flight.

Trekking

This is the best way to get up close with nature, but be aware of your stamina levels and physical capabilities before choosing a Patagonia hiking trail. For experienced enthusiasts with great physical condition to engage in this exhausting activity, the level of difficulty of Paso Behan trail will be an unforgettable adventure for trekking as well as the moderately difficult trail of Paso de la Oveja which is around 23 miles long. There are also less tiring and shorter trails intended for newbie trekkers which are found inside of Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. You can try the trek to the Mirador Lapataia for an awesome experience. Most visitors love the easy and accessible Laguna Esmeralda, making it the most popular trail because of the surrounding views of the river and lake seen along the way.

Skiing

Feel the excitement and thrill of skiing and snowboarding in one of the best Ushuaia ski centers. Ski season is celebrated by hundreds of avid skiers during June to September. There are flat runs to learn on as well as downhill ones to show off your skills. Cerro Castor and Glacier El Martial offer a perfect ground for your favorite winter sport. El Martial features a 30-meter wide run while Cerro Castor has 15 tracks for every level of skier. For cross-country skiing, you can visit some of the Ushuaia ski centers like Tierra Mayor, Altos del Valle, Solar del Bosque, and Francisco Jerman, among others. The Ushuaia ski centers are definitely of the best in South America.

Kayaking/Boating

There are no limits to Ushuaia’s adventure activities. Apart from skiing and trekking, you can explore the surrounding waters of Ushuaia by kayaking or boating during your Patagonia travel experience. Be bold and head out to explore the Beagle Channel, where you can see the wonders far from land. Watch the variety of birds as they swoop above the Islas de los Lobos and enjoy the penguins, sea lions, and other creatures in your journey.

Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego and Museums

Don’t miss Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego on your trip to Ushuaia. It’s just few kilometers away and is in fact why most people come all the way down here. Embrace the beauty of wildlife as you indulge yourself in the activities offered in the park. There are well-marked trails for everyone to follow and explore the park no matter your ability. Keep your eyes open as you walk along to catch sights of the condors, albatross and other birds flying over the sky. Watch out for the beavers’ dam system and be amazed at these creatures’ wonderful creation. If you want some more, you can roam around the city and visit some of its tourist attractions like the Museo del Fin del Mundo and Museo Maritimo y del Presidio. Explore the cultural centers of Ushuaia and witness the art and culture they showcase in the Casa de la Cultura too.

Patagonia fly fishing spots for enthusiasts.

Patagonia is a paradise that captivates every human heart with its beauty and magnificent scenic views.

The glaciers, mountains and fjords are just some of the marvelous tourist attractions in Patagonia.

Although trekking in Patagonia is one the most popular activities, you can experience the adventure of fly fishing in the rivers and lakes during your Patagonia travel as well.

Here are five of the top Patagonia fly fishing spots.

#1 Lago Verde and Rio Rivadavia

Los Alerces National Park is one of the best locations for Patagonia fly fishing. You can start your angling journey from Lago Verde where you can catch a variety of trout. This lake has a wonderful landscape that you’ll enjoy while fishing. It’s best to go fishing at the reeds and banks of Lago Verde and then go floating to the river of Rio Rivadavia. You can enjoy the exciting Patagonia fly fishing challenge in this river while watching the views of snow-capped mountains and the greenish-blue water. This marvelous Argentina river is one of the most visited fly fishing spots for experienced anglers where they can catch huge brown trout, salmon, and rainbow trout.

#2 Rio Arrayanes

Rio Arrayanes is a wide river which is an excellent site for Patagonia fly fishing. The beauty of the Arrayanes jungle will fire up the intensity of fishing. Rainbow trout is abundant in this area as well as large brown trout. Most fishermen out here use streamers or mayfly. The banks of this river are lined with trees and its branches are hanging in the river which will provide a bit of shade for your long day out fishing.

#3 Rio Frey

This incredible river may not be as long as the other rivers in Patagonia, but the number of fish you can catch is rewarding. It’s far from civilization which makes it amazing for fishing. Though Rio Frey doesn’t have roads, the experienced guides will make your fishing exciting as you float out to the fishing site. It’s a marvelous river to sight-fish where abundant brooks, rainbows and brown trout are found. You can take off from a public lodge in Refugio Kruger where you can meet and mingle with other fellow anglers or check out some trails for trekking in Patagonia.

#4 Rio Carrileufu

Rio Carrileufu is known for fishing landlocked salmon. The crystal clear color of the water makes it easy to sight fish. Dry fly fishing is commonly used by anglers and this wide river will be a great spot to enjoy fishing. Rio Carrileufu is inhabited with rainbows, brooks and browns. Sunny days are excellent to see the fish as they swim the river and will give you the opportunity for endless fishing. This magnificent river flows into Los Alerces National Park through Cholila Valley with a length of around 20 miles.

#5 Arroyo Pescado Spring Creek

The famous Arroyo Pescado Spring Creek is one of the reasons why Patagonia fly fishing is so amazing. This creek is located in a private land and fly fishing is the only thing allowed. Its thick slippery river bed will be a challenge for anglers during their Patagonia travel, but the quality and quantity of fish you’ll catch in Arroyo Pescado will all be worth it. Wind is a bit tough in this area, so you must start your fishing early. Dry fly fishing is best in this river and you’ll surely catch brown and rainbow trout with streamers or nymphs.

These are just few of the numerous spots for a Patagonia adventure. You can explore as many as you want if you have the time and of course resources to do so. Patagonia travel is awesome when you take it to the next level and go fly fishing. You’ll have a great experience and memories to last a lifetime when you explore the rivers and lakes of Patagonia.

Don't forget to consider these ten things before trekking in Patagonia.

If you want to make your holiday extraordinary, experience the most awesome adventure of a lifetime and get yourself ready for a marvelous Patagonia travel adventure.

Trekking in Patagonia is one of the most amazing activities that attract thousands of tourists annually. The opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, and exploring are literally endless.

However, this is the kind of trip that you need to approach by being well prepared. Keep in mind some of the tips for Patagonia travel here.

#1 Arrange Visas and Other Requirements

It’s always wise to prepare everything before you leave your resident country and never forget to check your passport’s validity, otherwise you’ll waste your time, money and effort when you’re denied entry. Although visas are not required for travelers from Australia, Europe, Canada, USA and New Zealand, there is an entry charge that varies depending on what country you’re coming from, some as high as $130 US.

#2 Check the Weather

On every trip you take, you should always check the weather of your destination. Patagonia’s weather is unpredictable and you should be prepared for it. The wind of Patagonia is cold so it’s good to bring all the necessary gear for this type of weather condition. Patagonia hiking is best during spring and summer seasons. Plan a trip from October to April if you want to clearly see the wonderful scenic views of Patagonia.

#3 Plan Transportation

You have the option to take a bus, self drive, hop on a cruise, or book a flight to travel to Patagonia. For ferries, Navimag is the most famous cruise to Patagonia which provides spectacular view of the surrounding fjords. It will take you to Puerto Natales where you can start your Torres del Paine trekking trip. If you don’t have much time to take a cruise or you’ll get seasick, you can just fly to one of the towns with airports. If your budget is lower, you can take advantage of one of the buses that head to the region – though be prepared for many hours cooped up on the bus!

#4 Where To Go, What To Do

Think about where exactly you want to go and what activities you may want to do aside from trekking in Patagonia. There are several tourist attractions that you could explore. Patagonia is blessed with jaw-dropping landscapes and world heritage status national parks. You can try your hand at various activities like skiing, Patagonia fly fishing, kayaking and the most renowned trekking in Patagonia.

#5 Plan Your Trekking In Patagonia Trails And Routes

There are many routes for trekking in Patagonia available and you must plan ahead to save time. Trekking Torres del Paine for example can be made possible from different routes like the Full Circuit or the W Route. For the best routes for your Patagonia hiking adventure, inquire and ask some tourist guides locally but make sure that every route you take is within your capabilities. Some routes are long and quite exhausting so it’s better to be aware of the difficulty levels of each route.

#6 Money and Language

If you travel to other countries, bear in mind the currency of the place. When you travel to Patagonia, make sure that you have enough money to pay the entrance fees of the parks and other fees needed. In Patagonia, you’ll use either Chilean or Argentinean pesos. Therefore, know exactly where you’re heading and have your money converted into the currency used in the country you’ll be visiting. Most of the locals in Patagonia speak Spanish. Learn at least a few simple Spanish words and phrases to help you communicate well with the people of the region.

#7 What to Pack

Plan the number of days you wish to stay and travel to Patagonia. With this, bring enough clothes, food as well as enough money for your journey. If you want to go trekking in Patagonia, bring the appropriate attire like long sleeves, pair of socks, rain gears and other personal stuff you need for hiking. For a detailed list of things to pack, check out our packing list recommendations.

#8 Accommodation

You should definitely plan your accommodation before you travel, or at least be aware of the options available. This is important to make your trip more comfortable and easy. There are several hotels in Patagonia depending on the location you’ll be based out of. If roughing it in the outdoors is your thing, there are tons of campsites found in Patagonia. You can also rent camping equipment if you can’t bring your own.

#9 Services in Patagonia

It’s a must to know the services available in Patagonia before you travel so that you’ll know what to bring when you get there. Patagonia utilizes a230/240 volts of electricity so bring an adapter for your electrical equipment. Mobile phones are widely used and there are satellite phones you can use, though they can be costly.

#10 Stay Safe

Be safe all the time. Make sure that when you travel, you know where to ask for help in case of emergencies and be sure to know the location of your embassy. Don’t eat anything that looks old and drink water that is safe for consumption. Respect the locals and their customs and traditions to avoid any trouble.

It’s extremely important to plan ahead and pack all the things you’ll need before your trekking in Patagonia trip. Here are some of the things you should bring with you for your epic adventure in Patagonia.

One of the best things to do in South America is trekking in Patagonia. The excitement and thrill is intense during a Patagonia travel expedition; therefore, you must be well prepared for Patagonia hiking.

With this, it’s extremely important to plan ahead and list the things you’ll need to pack for trekking in Patagonia. You don’t want to arrive to the region without proper equipment and clothing.

Below are some of the things you should bring with you for your epic adventure in Patagonia.

#1: Clothing

The weather in Patagonia is unpredictable. Even if the sun is shining, the wind is cool so it’s better to bring clothes that will keep you warm while you’re hiking. Long-sleeved shirts are a wise choice, along with Columbia Boys 8-20 Space Heater ll Jacket, a wool sweater, fleece cap and gloves to provide you sufficient comfort. Use lightweight pants so that they won’t slow you down while trekking in Patagonia. Boots are necessary in hiking terrains so you must bring some, but choose medium weight boots so it won’t add up to your weight luggage. Bring a pair of wool socks to keep your feet in shape when hiking. If the forecast is cloudy, bring rain gear like rain-proof jackets and pants to keep you dry during your Patagonia hiking trip. Include running shoes to be used during the night for camping. Of course, don’t forget to bring your personal items like underwear and toiletries and make sure you have enough for the whole trip.

#2: Food

Trekking in Patagonia can be exhausting, and having the right kind of food to keep you going is vital. If you will be making stops in areas with restaurant options, like El Calafate or Ushuaia, you don’t have to bring plenty of food – just some crackers and protein bars will be enough for day treks. For longer hikes, you should bring food with you to. There are camps that allow you to cook, but you have to bring your own mess kit. Just like any exerting activity, staying hydrated is paramount, so bring Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle and make sure the water bottles are attached to your pack to keep it in place while hiking.

#3: Sleeping Gear

If you’re planning on camping, bring with you a light sleeping bag. It’s a must to bring flashlights with spare batteries at night, especially to find things and see your surroundings in the dark. To keep insects from bugging (excuse the pun) you all night, get a comprehensive insect repellent. Lightweight tents can be used to add less weight for those long spurts of trekking in Patagonia.

#4: First Aid Kit

Safety is the utmost priority for every trip. It’s impossible to control everything as you go trekking in Patagonia and it’s always possible to experience circumstances beyond your control like accidents and injuries. Health care facilities might be far, so knowledge about first aid is essential. In your kit you may include Band-Aids, bandages, alcohol pads, Betadine for cuts and wounds, anti-diarrhea medicine, paracetamol for fever and creams for itchy bites.

#5: Miscellaneous

Taking pictures is the best part of trekking in Patagonia. Bring enough batteries, memory cards, and protective gear for the trip. Bring sunblock as well as sunglasses with a neck strap to keep them from falling while you’re in Patagonia hiking. Don’t forget to bring lip balm to avoid lip cracks and other toiletries you need, especially for women. A Victorinox Swiss Army Swiss Champ Pocket Knife (Red) is also a good idea. Keep everything organized and accessible with eBags Packing Cubes – 3pc Set.

Patagonia travel is an awesome adventure that you’ll always cherish. Bring everything that you need for a Patagonia hiking adventure and be sure to include the list from above. If you plan to use a tour company while trekking in Patagonia, make sure to check with them about things to bring so there is no overlap.
